Direct TV has plans for backup uplink facility in Moxee

Direct TV plans to purchase a 26,100-square-foot facility off Grant Way and transform the building into an uplink facility. Should Direct TV's main facility go off the air, the proposed Moxee project would ensure broadcasts are not interrupted. Tonight, the City Council will hold a closed-record public hearing on the Direct TV application during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 255 W. Seattle Ave. It is a closed-record hearing; only comments that have been previously submitted during the application process or at the hearing examiner's review session will be considered.

The satellite television company intends to purchase nearly four acres at 106 Grant Way from concrete contractor Poppoff Inc. The property, which is zoned light industrial, is next to Alexandria Molding and behind Ace Hardware's new massive distribution center. If the Direct TV application is approved, the company would use the metal warehouse building to house electronic equipment and supporting mechanical and electrical systems.

Up to four satellite antennas, each with a maximum diameter of 30 feet, would be installed on the property. The company is requesting to install up to 10 more satellite antennas. Antennas, which will be 35 feet or smaller, will be installed on new concrete foundations located on the north side of the existing warehouse building to provide significant screening from the highway. A Direct TV representative could not be reached Wednesday for more information about the project.

The company is organized into two operating groups, one serving the United States and the other providing service to Latin America. There are about 13.5 million subscribers in the United States and 1.6 million in 28 Latin American countries, most in Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina and Puerto Rico.Fox Entertainment Group has a 34 percent stake in the Direct TV Group. The rest of the company is owned by News Corp.
