Russian Proton Carrier To Orbit Us Direct Tv-8 Satellite On May 21
The launch of the Russian Proton-M launch vehicle with the American DIRECT TV-8 satellite is scheduled for 9:59 p.m. Moscow time Saturday May 21 from Baikonur space center, the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos) said.
The DIRECT TV-8 satellite will provide high-quality Ku-band broadcasting services, to be chosen by US audiences at request.
The satellite, which has 16 high-powered transponders designed for high-quality digital telecasting, will sustain the proper level of this service with an increased encoding speed.
The apparatus is based on the LS-1300 platform designed by Space Systems/Loral and has long proved its reliability. The service life of the LS-1300 platform for geostationary satellites is 15 years; it can stay in the planned orbit by employing a two-component propulsion system and a propulsion control system.
Moreover, a system of high-performance solar batteries and accumulators with a light specific weight ensures a permanent generation of electricity. Until the expiry of its service life, the craft will be able to generate up to 8,500 watt, although after undocking its weight will be less than 3,800 kilograms.
The DIRECT TV-8 satellite is registered with the International Telecommunications Union and its primary orbital slot will be 101 degrees West longitude. Besides, the apparatus will be able to operate also from the slots at 110 and 119 degrees West longitude owned by the company.
